Age is the single greatest risk factor for most causes of death and disability. The odds of developing diabetes, heart disease, most cancers, kidney disease, dementia and many other conditions significantly increase in later life. By understanding the mechanisms of biological aging, we have the opportunity to slow both the onset and progression of these disorders. The benefit to individuals will be the extension of healthspan — the period of life spent in good health, free from chronic disability and disorders.
The research being performed by HALO faculty and trainees is leading the field of geroscience closer toward our goal of maximizing healthy lifespan.
