The mission of the UW Healthy Aging and Longevity Research Institute is to enhance understanding of the biological mechanisms of aging in order to promote healthy longevity. This goal is accomplished through direct support for basic research on biological aging, training the next generation of geroscientists, and outreach to the broader scientific community and the general public.
Moving toward 21st Century Medicine
HALO is founded on the idea that targeting biological aging is the most effective approach to increasing the period of life spent in good health, free from chronic disease and disability. This approach toward ‘maximizing healthspan’ is the key principle of 21st Century Medicine, a concept pioneered by HALO Founder and Former Director Dr. Matt Kaeberlein. Instead of waiting until people are sick and trying to cure their disease, we seek to keep people healthier longer by pushing back the molecular “Hallmarks of Aging”.
UW: A world leader in geroscience
HALO provides the foundation for one of the most innovative and productive geroscience research communities in the world. To learn more about major HALO Initiatives, HALO faculty and trainees, and our latest discoveries, we invite you to explore this site. Major HALO initiatives include the UW Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging and the Biological Mechanisms of Healthy Aging Training Program. Both of these prestigious programs are funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a part of the National Institutes of Health.
HALO needs your support!
Please consider supporting HALO. By donating to HALO you can help us in our mission to improve human health and longevity. Funds can be dedicated to training for students, specific research initiatives, or general HALO operations. All donations to the University of Washington are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
HALO Research
Age is the single greatest risk factor for most causes of death and disability. The odds of developing diabetes, heart disease, most cancers, kidney disease, dementia and many other conditions significantly increase in later life. By understanding the mechanisms of biological aging, we have the opportunity to slow both the onset and progression of these disorders. The […]
Understanding Aging
The HALO Research Institute supports basic research aimed at defining mechanisms of biological aging at all levels, from molecular to cellular to whole animal. HALO also supports translational efforts to use this knowledge to increase healthy lifespan and prevent age-related diseases. Our goal is to maximize healthspan in order to improve quality and increase quantity […]
HALO Faculty
A diverse group of accomplished scholars unlocking the mysteries of aging. […]
