Dr. Mariya Sweetwyne (she/her) is a Cell Biologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) in the UW School of Medicine. She earned a B.S. in Zoology and a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Washington, followed by a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her postdoctoral work included a teaching fellowship and research in bone and kidney biology at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), followed by further training in kidney biology and the biology of aging at the UW. Her laboratory focuses on basic and translational research to better understand how cellular aging and mitochondrial decline in the kidney shapes the progression of kidney diseases. The goal of this research is to identify safe therapeutic targets to reduce or prevent kidney disease progression, which is highly prevalent in older people. Academically, she is working to foster a laboratory environment that welcomes mentees from both traditional and less-conventional training paths. Her aim is to support mentees achieve their own unique career goals while also fostering rigorous science by building a creatively diverse research team.
