Infectious Disease Pilots

About

The University of Washington Nathan Shock Center pleased to announce a new request for pilot
applications focusing on Aging Biology and Infectious Disease. This area should be interpreted broadly to
include, but not limited to, changes in immune resilience with age and contribution of previous infection
to age-related pathology. As our basic knowledge grows, new insights into the biology of aging require
increasingly complex and multidisciplinary approaches. In response, this new pilot will provide support
for up to $15,000 of core services from the following UW NSC:

Protein Phenotypes of Aging (MacCoss, Villen)
Metabolic Phenotypes of Aging (Raftery, Marcinek)
Invertebrate Models of Aging (Dunham, Mendenhall)
Explainable AI Analysis of Aging Phenotypes (Lee)

Review criteria

• Appropriateness of core services
• Novelty of the hypothesis and potential impact on future funding
• Career stage of PI, with preference given to early career investigators
• Responsiveness to the topic of Aging Biology and Infectious Disease

Application Format

• Page 1: Title page with PI and institution contact information

• Page 2: Hypothesis and specific aims of the project

• Page 3: The specific UW Nathan Shock resources that are requested, the number of samples
that will be analyzed and an approximate timeframe for completion of the studies. Please
contact core leaders before submission of the application to discuss project details.

• Page 4: A one (1) paragraph statement on how this research will impact your future directions in
aging research and timeframe for the submission of manuscripts and/or grant applications

• Page 5: Budget justification. Please contact core leaders before submission of the application to
discuss the budget.
