Sid Venkatesh received a PhD in chemical engineering from Auburn University and a PhD in molecular virology from The Rockefeller University. Sid completed postdoctoral training at Washington University in St. Louis. His postdoctoral research led to the development of microbiota-directed nutritional interventions, work that was published in Science in 2019 and was a finalist for “Breakthrough of the Year”. He also identified gut microbial amidases that stimulate hunger-related biological pathways in malnourished children, work published in Science in 2024. This microbiota-directed nutritional intervention was one of Time Magazine’s “Inventions of the Year” in 2025. Sid established his independent research program at ISB in September 2023, and his long-term goals are to define general principles of molecular recognition in the gut lumen and to study the mechanisms by which members of the gut microbiota impact human physiology and signaling.
