Dr. Phil Abitua is an assistant professor in the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington. The Abitua lab works on annual killifish, an emerging model to study aging due to its remarkable adaptation to an ephemeral environment, which compressed its lifespan to approximately 4-6 months. We are interested in how environmental pressures may have evolved adaptations in the short-lived killifish that improve fitness in the early embryo but that make them more prone to disease in adulthood. To study this question, we are using a multidisciplinary approach including genomics, developmental biology, evo-devo, and quantitative biology.
