Dr. Reed is Section Chief of Geriatric Medicine at Harborview, Medical Director of the HMC Senior Care Clinic and UW Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine. She is also Associate Director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program.
Dr. Reed’s longstanding interest is in evaluating the effects of the extracellular environment on tissue repair and the microvasculature in aging. Much of her work has focused on traditional extracellular matrix components such as collagens, matrix metalloproteinases, and growth factors, in vitro and in vivo. Dr. Reed has a specific interest in hyaluronan (HA), a highly expressed disaccharide polymer that is not well studied in aged tissues.
Projects in the lab focus on regulation of HA expression and size in aging brains and in brains exposed to trauma or neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. Dr. Reed was in the second cohort of Beeson Scholars in Aging Research and has had continuous funding from the NIH for over 20 years. She is also the Director of the UW MSTAR (Medical Student Training in Aging Research) Program.
