The HALO Research Institute supports basic research aimed at defining mechanisms of biological aging at all levels, from molecular to cellular to whole animal. HALO also supports translational efforts to use this knowledge to increase healthy lifespan and prevent age-related diseases. Our goal is to maximize healthspan in order to improve quality and increase quantity of life.
Over the past few decades, scientists have made great progress at understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of aging. These mechanisms have been formalized into several “hallmarks” or “pillars” of aging, each of which is a potential target to modify the aging process. HALO researchers seek to better understand the aging process and use that information to delay, or even reverse, functional declines and diseases of old age.
